Top end oil leak (again) w/video

Post by AZ79 »

Short video-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfOkjLkQ ... e=youtu.be
Weird oil leak only happens after high-speed driving on the freeway. It gets all over the top of the engine, and really pools up over on the driver's-side fenderwell where the vapor canister used to be.
This engine has all new gaskets and seals. In fact, I just put new neoprene valve cover gaskets on to be sure it wasn't them.
It doesn't appear to be a crankshaft seal.. The Cam seals are good and I don't see oil coming from them... The dipstick is sealed into place on the block, new seal on the block distributor hole...
Are there bolts that I put in that required a sealant, that I missed? Do any of the bolts holding the cam towers need to be sealed? How about the head bolts themselves? The video might not show it well, but sometimes there's so much oil that it fills the spark plug wells. It only does this after hard driving on the freeway. I can clean it up and drive peacefully around town all day and it doesn't happen... But spend 10 minutes doing 75 and you can smell the oil baking.

Two places I'd look: the two bolts holding the cam covers on... good gaskets under the bolt?
: the oil cap when it has a buggered rubber gasket is notorious for spraying oil about.

Say wha? Gaskets under the bolts? I had no idea.
Yes, I put a new cork gasket on the oil cap.. I'm sure it's staying sealed now.
You say there are gaskets supposed to be on those 4 bolts? Because that's totally where the oil looks like it's coming from.....
:o

Oh wait... The CAM COVER bolts... I thought you meant the bolts up there by the cam wheels... Yes, I have new gaskets on those...

Perhaps put some blue shop towel around the oil cap and go for a drive around the block, a few 4500rpm shifts and see what it looks like when you get back.
Just a gut feeling thats all as I've had an issue with several oil caps as well as time-X gaskets under the cover bolts.

The only thing I can think it might be is maybe the cam towers are wrong, or on wrong. I have an 1800 head, but I'm using the exhaust cam tower off a '79 2000 head. I dunno.
I'll clean it up again and wrap a rag around the oil cap and try again, I guess.
