For some time now, my '78 Spider has been popping out of 1st gear if accelerated hard or when coasting in 1st. If I am taking off from a stop light for example, and must accelerate hard to merge, I have to keep hand pressure on the shifter until it's time to shift to 2nd. There are no other tranny/shifting issues. Any idea what's causing this? Easy fix? Tranny going south?
TIA.
Popping out of 1st
Re: Popping out of 1st
I know when you are having issues with your 2nd or higher, it usually means that your tranny needs new synchros. Not sure if this applies to 1st gear or if it's related to clutch or other tranny issue.

Re: Popping out of 1st
early pop out problems can be caused by worn pads on the shifting forks. You see this more commonly on 2nd and 3rd gear. 1st and 2nd share the same shift fork. the issue is as the pad wears, the shift fork doesnt put the gear all the way in its proper position, so it pops back when any force is put on it. If this is let go and not fixed it will eat the synchos
