Glad there's nothing wrong with the cooling system. As for the exhaust fumes, are you noticing it while driving with the top up or down? Is it in the cockpit or are you referring to the exhaust smelling rich?
Mileage can vary significantly with these cars. I have a 72 that only gets 25 on the highway (could it be my driving? )
and my 71 that gets 30. Both have the dual carbs. My sorry X19 gets 45 mpg and it's equipped with FI.

the fan should turn on when the needle hits the 0 in 190. As a coincidence today, I had a Spider with fan trouble and it turns out the temp gauge is reading about 15 degrees hotter than the engine is really running. Check the water temp with a thermometer to check the accuracy of the gauge/sender

Ok here it is. 1981 Spider 2000 Fuel Injected. Was only getting about 20-22 miles per gallon when I put her away last fall . Doesn't that seem low? Exaust smells rich. I rarely (once) drive the car with the top up. If I have the car idling long and it's not outside of my garage (door open, obviously) my clothes smell like exhaust fumes.
Could this exhaust smell be a hint as to why I'm getting such poor gas mileage? What are common sensors or adjustments on this Bosch system that could contribute to this?
I should probably start a new link for this discussion.

One of the members of this forum,Brad Artigue, has a web page that will take you step by step on tuning your fuel injection. I found it really easy to follow and printed out the whole manual for future ref.The site is http://www.artigue.com/fiat. I went through the same problem w/ cooling system and the fan not coming on when it should. My problem was a stuck thermostat.I figured it out after a 2 hour drive in 30 deg. temps w/ no heat!
