Perhaps a bit of emery cloth run over those flat spots on the block will bring them up so you can see them. The links I posted show the places to look depending on what block you actually have.

I would expect you have a 1608 though given the easy interchangability any year engine could be in there...

well thanks

i actually thought they where all stamped at the oil filter housing. my other engine in my parts car is a 1608 and it is stamp just above the oil filter, so perhaps this is not a 1608 in this 72. i am wondering where the stamp is for a 1800?
there no way there is a 2.0 in this car
so i am ASSUMING that it is either a 1608/1800

on the side of the block, under the intake manifold, there's a cast code that looks something like 132c2000, or 125b1000 etc

The later engines have it stamped to the right of the oil filter housing. It is on a flat area just below the cyclonic oil separator. Which would suggest it is an 1800

from what i can see, it appears that you have a 2.0l i would like to see the whole assembly in one picture. if it is a replacement block the serial # could be on the flat area you see near the breather, not the fuel pump mount. what numbers are on the head. not the casting number but the model # ie 132c2343 etc and no the fuel pump from a 1608 and a 2.0 will not interchange. the arm lengths are different
