alternator question

trying to hook up a headlight conversion kit and having problems... simple enough task but when i hook up the battery lights come on.... first question... should i be getting power to the back of the alternator with key off???

Yes.
The lead from the battery goes to the starter solenoid top lug. one of the wires from that lug goes to the B+ alternator lug

Don't forget most Spiders headlight switches are "OFF" in the up position and that the parking lights come on with the ignition switch in the "OFF" position. Both are "OFF" when the headlight switch is in the "UP" position.

It seems like you have attached an always on wire to the exciter side of the relays (86).

You should use a wire that originates from the light switch or is controlled by the light switch to go to the 86 connector of the relay. Wires you could use are already at the lights: the original low beam and high beam wires (previously attached to the headlights themselves) which should go to the 86 connector of the low and high beam relays. The always hot (with an inline fuse) line from the starter or alternator should be going to the 30 connector.
