Snap Ring- axle shft

I have been trying for aboput 45 minutes to get the snap ring out so I can pull the axle. I can not get the snap ring to come out. I am able to get the snap ring pliers on the ring and squeeze the ring together, but I can not get the ring out. When I try and move the snap ring aaround to get it out the snap ring pliers come off.

Is there a trick to getting the snap ring out. I need help.

Once you get the pliers in there and compress it some, take a small flat blade screw driver and get it between the housing and snap ring.

the ring needs to be compressed alot to clear the slot. If you dont have high quality snap ring plyers, they wont have the strength to hold under compression. I have the kind where you thread the compression rather than hold by hand. this makes it much easier to carefully manipulate the ring free of the groove.
