oil pressure
if the oil pressure reads zero when it at a idol, and reads high when u drive, does that a possible the sending unit is bad. i know for a fact that it gets oil all over or the engine would be shot.
i have not taking a oil pressure test but it will be done next week, so i am just wondering on this

If you search this topic, it gets discussed ad-naseum.
Very common.

Re: oil pressure
Did you change your oil pump? And did it stop the problem? My oil pressure reads a little below the middle of the gauge. Have a good day!
Re: oil pressure
I think the oil pressure will change between idle and driving. Mine reads about 1/4 of the guage (I think about 12) at idle and around 1/2 (around 30) under power.
I think as long as you have pressure while driving you should be okay, but I am no means a mechanic or expert.

Re: oil pressure
fiat oil pressure guages are by nature very inacurate, whereas the temperature guages are very acurate. the sending units plug up with debris and oil sludge(i guess) and quit sending proper readings.
i have installed new units and at the same time had a known acurate mechanical guage installed at he same time and saw very different readings, so i do not trust the fiat oil pressure guage. i do highly recomend replacing the oil light unit. when new or not leaking those are very acurate. if the light comes on shut it donw immediatly. if you have a 2.0l and it comes on when cornering, your oil pump pickup is broken (most likely). shut it off and fix it. air in the oil will kill bearings in seconds at higher rpm's.
funny thing. some days my spider has 90psi of pressure at idle by the guage. others it hardly moves the guage. some times it has 50psi when running down the road, other times none, some times the guage is pegged out. all other guages function properly so i do not waste my time with it. i have replaced both sending units and the guage and checked all the wiring for resistance. all good...

Re: oil pressure
So based on your reply BEEK, my oil light on the gauge has been on ever since I blew a fuse when I first bought the car. Driving the car home I hit a big pothole and blew the fuse that was for the tach, oil pressure, fuel gage, and temp gauge. Replaced the fuse and ever since the light on the oil pressure gauge has been on. I figured that since I had pressure I should be okay and it could be a fault wire on the light.
I did find another blown fuse on an in-line fuse holder behind the dash, haven't replaced that fuse yet. Wonder if that could be the reason why the light on the oil gauge is on.
Sorry for hijacking the thread.

Re: oil pressure
fiat124,
I just installed a mechanical guage and it works great. Easy install and cheap. I think it was less than $20. No trouble with it all.
I will let you know what my pressures are running next time I take a cruze.

Re: oil pressure
Can you give me details on that Sunpro gauge? Do you have the model number? Thanks.
Re: oil pressure
If the stock gauge is faulty, is there any method of verification, while the engine is running, to ensure the oil pump is functioning properly?
I also would like to know the procedure of installing that separate line and gauge along with parts used and where bought (part numbers would be perfect).

Re: oil pressure
he oil light is not on a fuse, if the light is on constantly, you have a grounded wire or a bad sending unit124Germ wrote:So based on your reply BEEK, my oil light on the gauge has been on ever since I blew a fuse when I first bought the car. Re: oil pressure
Gentlemen,
The Sunpro guage was bought at Advanced Auto and probably available in many auto stores. Choice of black or white faces. All of the parts are included in the package. Installation procedure is simple. Easier to remove the alternator. Disconnect the oil light sending unit above the oil filter(rear side) and reinstall that on the front side. All of the hardware is included and I simply used lots of teflon tape on the plug. I used all of the small plastic tubing and protected that in the engine bay with a rubber tubing. Snug those tubing compression fittings up since you don't want any leaks. Good readings and no problems. Looks ok. The extra hole can be cut in the dash with a hole saw or you can buy the new dash with the extra hole. If you go with drilling your own hole just be sure to fill in the original hole first with glued in matching(somewhat) wood. This will eliminate the hole saw pilot from wandering. Measure carefully here so that everything fits.
