'81 turbo spider idle problem

Post by opmills »

I've had a rough idle on my '81 turbo for several years. Never could figure out the problem. This year I noticed that, when the engine is cold, the idle is fine - smooth. As it warms up the idle becomes rough. The car runs fine otherwise. Does this new bit of information provide a clue about the problem's source?

Thanks!

the change might be because the cold idle is higher than when warm. If you raise the warm idle slightly, does the motor smooth out?

Mark,

What RPM should the engine be running at idle? 1200?

Is that idle speed for the turbo only, or for FI as well? I thought it was lower.

I just got my '81 running after fixing a gas leak since purchasing it almost 2 weeks ago (it's a turbo that was converted to FI). My #1 doesn't appear to be firing properly, giving me a rough idle, but I'm going to post the details in a new post. I'd appreciate any advice Mark. Hi Owen.
