Main bearing trouble

Post by ososbob »

I'm hoping for a little advise. Today I started putting back together my 2.0 FI engine. When I took it apart I plastic guaged the main bearings and they were within tolerance. I crosses referenced the numbers on the old bearings an it appears they were standard. So I ordered some new standard bearings and put them in. When I torqed the bolts down to the correct torq, my crnk would not turn. So I plastic guaged the new bearings and I only have. 023 mm Clarence which is below the tolerance of. 033 to .077. Is it possible I was sent the wrong bearings? Any suggestions?

did you mic the bearings? you could see if they are standard or not.
I assumed you used assembly lube?

I did not mic the bearings, and yes I lubed the bearings and journels. To arrow I'm going to buy a mic and mic both the old and new.

Update: I had initially installed the center bearings on the wrong journal. Now everything is in the correct place. However, if I torq all bearing caps down except the center bearing the crank turns. The minute I torq the center down. The crank does not move freely. Again I'm going to mic everything layer this morning.

So I mic both the old and new center bearing, not were 1.85 mm. Put the new center bearing back in and torqed it down. Guess what crank spins freely. Rechecked the rest of the bearing bolts, all were torqed correctly. Can't explain it but its working as it should. Maybe reaching out to fellow Fiat owners coaxed it into place.

OK another stupid question. The middle piston ring has a beveled edge. The instructions that came with the new rings said all marks go up, leading me to believe the beveled edge would go up. But my shop manual gives a diagram that would suggest the beveled edge goes down. Anyone know the correct position of the beveled edge?

if the instructions say it has a mark, that usually means a dot or something similar.

Agree with this. There is almost ALWAYS a mark of some sort. a dot, an arrow, a triangle, something. Inspect all surfaces closely.
Additionally: some ring manufacturers will package the rings in packaging that separates the 3, and has instruction on the package for each ring type. Check the packaging.
Finally: check the website of the ring manufacturer: if they don;t mark their rings, then you aren't the first one to wonder which way they should go in.

I went back and inspected the ring, guess what it did have a mark, the mark was "Top" made me feel stupid but that's OK, because the crank and pistons are in and now I can focus on finishing the port and polish on the head.
