My tranny had bearing issues(noisy) so I swaped it out today with a known good one from an 81.
Got the thing out and the good one back in. Took longer than I thought as I had never done this by myself. Anyway I put a new release bearing in with thin coat of grease as per manual. I had a weird looking plastic one that looked tired.
Got it all buttoned up and clutch cable connected and went to check the play and engagement and the pedal did not return to the top....
Checked the fire wall..no issues before and none now. I used the old spring as the old clutch worked as it should with the short clip. Ok took the clip out and tried that...still no pedal return. Took another spring and added that... OK now it returns so I packed up and went home to fiddle with it another day.
I had moved the boot to have a look when I pushed on the release fork and it moved just fine. Had the car about 4 feet off the ground and pushed the clutch pedal with a broom stick to see what was going on at the lever. Looked fine but did not pop back until the two spring thing.
The release fork and bearing works just fine when I push by hand but not the pedal. Its weird as the thing worked just fine this morning when I drove it before the swap.
Should I run it with two springs for awhile till it sorts itself out? or fiddle with it some more, I do not want to take the tranny out again..Those top bolts and top starter bolt are a real pain.
Any ideas what might be the issue?? anyone have this before??

wrong bearing. it won't sort it self before you snap release fork.
not to mention that your leg will suffer too

mabey have someone to help

Changed the clutch pedal thinking it was binding....nope same thing Checked the fork again and it was good.
I had put a new clutch in when I swapped the trans.although the original had a bit of life left. so now I'm thinking I did something goofy there.... nope..
This afternoon I dropped the trans again..getting good as it only took 45 minutes including that top starter bolt.
I took the new clutch off. and promptly broke a bolt welded nut trick tomorow I guess.
But anyway I put it next to the original that was on there and there is a difference. Old one I bought from Ital in Edmonton and was made in Italy, new one was from a local jobber store and a Beck Arnley from Bwitan. (my appoligies to the Monty-Python fans)
The one on the left is original right the new Beck Arnley
The new one looks like an imposter compared to the original...the cause of my problems???

That is what I was suspecting, but when I took it off yesterday afternoon, it was on the right way..
edit... it was pointed out that in the beck arnley, two of the spring clusters are doubled springed...???

Have it all sorted now. Put the old clutch back on as there was plenty of material left. Real nice to have a quiet tranny that shifts real smooth
