Engine problems

Post by swede »

Gents,

I got into some problems with my new engine.

The flywheel is smaller than the one I had before so the starter motor can’t reach it.
Does anyone have a list that shows what starter drive and flywheel that fits together?  :(

The new motor came from a 1974 Spider 1800cc (132A1000) if that gives any help.

with the smaller flywheel you need the smaller bellhousing, that will move the starter closer to the flywheel

So changing the bellhouse is the only way?

Man I should have checked this before installing the engine in the Spider, I didn’t realize this until it was time to test run it and the motor starter was running like crazy without turning the motor.
What an idiot I am, now I have to pull it out again and everything has to be completed by Friday so I can attend to the fiat meeting.

Thnks for the info Mark

What do you need a starter for? Just park on a hill, let it roll, and pop the clutch. Just kidding. Fortunately pulling the trans out is a little easier/faster than pulling the motor and swapping flywheels.

After the setback yesterday I was pissed and really motivated to get down to business since I have to be done in time for the Saturday Fiat meeting.
The engine was flying out of the car without the slightest trouble and I was quite surprised how easy it came out this time.

3 hours later it was back in the car again with another flywheel and clutch, it will be an easy ride tomorrow to put all wires and stuff back (I hope) :D

The difference sizes between those two flywheels aren’t that big but I learned a lesson, I will pay more attention to details next time. Thank you Mark for the info of the flywheel.
