(Edit) Help! Can't get it to start (Video big pop at carb)
I can't figure out what's going on. I have a 72 spider with a DMSA carb. Finally got everything hooked up and tried starting it and it pops out of the carb shooting up gas. Looked into the carb and looks like the manifold is full of gas. When I open the flappers to look all the way in and move the throttle, it looks like gas keeps shooting into the bottom of the carb into the manifold every time I move the throttle. What the heck is wrong? I don't want to blow the car up in the process of getting it started. I've never had it started yet and this is the first time I have it all put together to test.
Does anyone know why I'm getting that much gas into the carb??
Thanks.
(Edit)---- Seems the gas going in is fine. But just pops won't start. Turned the distributor, still not catching. I don't know which way is up anymore. How should I start it out, aim rotor somewhere? How do I turn it? is my coil bad? how do I check it? Should I sell the wife and just take it in somewhere???

Re: Help! intake manifold full of gas
A couple of things to look at. your shut-off needle valve in the float tank isnt closing or seating. also possible you have a hole in your float tank and it is full of gas. all this adding up to the level being too high in your carb reservior.
Re: Help! intake manifold full of gas
How much gas is supposed to be in carb? Should I be able to see it squirting in? Float is fine and valve is seating. I took a video of what's going on when I try and start it. I'll up load soon.azruss wrote:A couple of things to look at. your shut-off needle valve in the float tank isnt closing or seating. also possible you have a hole in your float tank and it is full of gas. all this adding up to the level being too high in your carb reservior.
It pops through the carb squirting up gas.

Re: Help! intake manifold full of gas (Video big pop at carb)
Check your timing. I'll bet that you're too far retarded(no offense). Also check your points and your distributor position and make sure it isn't spun 180*
I don't understand what you mean about gas shooting in when you pull the throttle. The car should be doing that. Every time you pull the throttle open the accelerator pump is going to squirt gas down into the carb/intake. It should be a precise, defined looking squirt though, not a gushing waterfall.
Also, double and triple check your needle valve and float settings. If the valve doesnt close, you're going to over flow the carb bowl and flood the carb.
Do you have an electronic fuel pump? What's the pressure?

Thanks, No I don't have an electronic fuel pump. Just replaced the old michanical with a new mechanical one. I don't get when you say make sure the Dist. position isn't spun 180 *. Where do I gauge the degree point?

180 degrees-out. I would bet a box of donuts on it.
line-up all the timing marks on the front of the motor. if they are all lined-up (I mean it, gotta see what position the cams are in!) then pop the dist cap: the rotor should be pointed at the #4 wire.
yes, #4. Not #1.
my guess is, you'll have it pointed 180 degrees away from there.
let us know what you find.

yes i third that
put the car in 4th push the car untill you see the holes in the cams line up "you can see them from the back"
then pull the cap if the rotor isnt at #4 turn it there
somewhat tighten the dizzy down and put the cap back on
then start that puppy
and time it untill it runs about idle speed

when you do everything correct people arent sure youve done anything at all (futurama)

Awesome... I now have the cams lined up and you are right, the rotor is pointing in the opposite direction. Now, my question is, how do I turn the rotor? It won't turn with my hands and I don't want to put too much pressure on it because I don't know what I'm doing.
Do I take the rotor off and use a pair of plyers?? How does it turn?

Unbolt the distributor hold-down, and then lift the distributor just enpough that the gear disengages from the cam. then you can turn the rotor. Pay attention to which way the rotor turns as you lift the dist out, you'll need to account for that as you reposition it.johnk63366 wrote:maytag wrote:180 degrees-out. sounds like you've got your problem narrowed-down now.
I'm excited for ya!

i had smae issue on mie i had cyl head machinged down and my shim towers had no clearance check for the20 thou clearnce betwee cam lobe ashim tower when cam load iif off that valve rotate check another and see if any are actuating before the cam lobe rolls on them
Re: (Edit) Help! Can't get it to start (Video big pop at carb)
Got it running, finally, but now I have a real high idle. 2000 rpm! won't come down. The idle screw is all the way out too, not even touching. I've replied on a different post I did earlier looking for advice. I'm running a DMSA carb on a 72 so I have a lot of ports that I won't use and they are plugged. Any thoughts?
Re: (Edit) Help! Can't get it to start (Video big pop at carb)
check your air bypass and mix screws, mix is usually one and a bit turns out turn them all the way in lightly car should basically not idle at all check for air leaks around carb and manifold

losen and turn the dizzy untill you are below idle then set the screw
