Dang that's nice. Got a question for you. I'm possibly going to have to do a rebuild too, how much does a rebuild cost if you are doing it yourself, all together cost from start to finish. I appreciate the insight. Need to know what I'm getting into and if it's worth the cost.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Rebuild costs are relative to machine shop labor required. Let's assume everything is in spec (it won't be) then you're looking at at least $1,000 in parts if you plan to replace everything (bearings, pistons, rings, gaskets, seals, valves, guides, etc.). You can cut several hundred off the cost if you can re-use your pistons (but really, get some slightly hotter pistons and you'll have a nice fast Spider). Then increments of $100 for various types of labor - cutting bores is around $200 at my shop for 4 (not relining, that's $150 per bore) - tanking and jigging in that aux bearing - guide removal and replacement - surfacing - cutting new seats - and so on.johnk63366 wrote:Dang that's nice. There is a lot of really junky stuff out there, and if you plan to be skimpy then expect a 2 year engine. Use a good vendor and discuss what you plan to do, options, etc.
Twin cams are easy to rebuild if you are clean and careful, can measure things, and know better than to guestimate. Machine shops can measure everything up and tell you what pistons to get (once you tell them what is available size-wise) and they'll cut to your pistons. Part of the fun is building these things yourself, so plan on the tools you need (a good torque wrench, engine stand helps, rent an A-frame to pull it, etc.).

This looks great so far! One day I may have to do this, but for now I'll just get some popcorn and see what other people do! Keep us posted and more pics!

First off I didn't intend to do a complete engine rebuild, but it wasn't a difficult sell when I did my last smog test and 2 of the readings were at the threshold for being a gross polluter, also as we got into the engine tear down there were parts that were out of tolerance range and therefore the rebuild was warranted, but did I need a $700 header no, but it's sexy and with the porting and matching of the exhaust manifold it should increase engine performance somewhat.
With all of that said I have a mechanic that is doing the labor so I can just give you a cost list on parts and labor. He just did the initial 20-minute Camshaft/tappet breakin, now he has to replace the heater core and have a muffler shop weld up the existing exhaust system to the header. So I should get the car back sometime this week. So I will send you an email with the parts and labor costs once I settle my bill. Good luck.
