How bad is my knocking..(Video)

Post by johnk63366 »

Ok, I'm really frustrated. After tearing everything down to replace head gasket all the way up, new fuel pump, finally figured how to attache a DMSA carb, figured out distributor... Finally got it started after 2 years of messing with it. Now she decides to start and give me more heartaches..

Please listen to this video and tell me how bad the knocking is. I'm at the point of just getting rid of her if I have to tear the engine apart again... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcoR7UIkM9w&feature=plcp

Give me the bad new gently...

that's nasty knock, or very loud rattle to be more precise.
hard to tell from youtube video. it could be something very stupid like loose cam gear and it could be fecked up crank bearings. have you tryed to locate the rattle? is it coming from lower or upper portion of the engine? take a piece of broom handle, a foot long, stick one end to your ear and the other to different parts of the engine while it's running. that should give you an idea where to start looking for a problem. how's the oil pressure?

When you put the head on did you check the alignment of the auxiliary pulley? Sounds like it may be mis-aligned.

Hmm, not sure how to check the auxiliary pulley. The repair manual I used never talked about that. I just pulled everything, changed the head gasket, might have turned the engine to see how the pistons were functioning, aligned them where they were originally, then put everything back together.

The knock sounds low. I can feel it vibrate when I touch the fuel pump. I can feel the knock from there. The fuel pump is new, just put it in. Definately not coming from the top. The sound is deep and loud.

Car runs Ok, but just freaked out because I thought I saw some moisture out the tail pipe and antifreeze is a shade darker than normal, but could be because I flushed the radiator, and then it sat and probably got some surface buildup, faint rusty color. So could be just coloring from that.

I'm just freaking out on everything at this point.

That's a deep down knock. Yes, it could be aux lobe hitting the rod end... Or it could be a rod bearing.
Go ahead and make sure your aux shaft is lined up correctly, then, if it's still knocking, I'd say a bearing for sure.

How is it under a load? does it sound serious when getting on it?

if it has good oil pressure, and you turned the engine with the head off I'll bet the aux shaft is mis-timed

So how the heck to I time the Aux shaft... and what the heck is the Aux shaft anyway. I'm just a backyard mechanic..bacically I spend more time in the backyard than being a mechanic...

the auxillary shaft drives the oil pump and it's driven by the timing belt. Line the dot on the pulley up with the pivot bolt for the timing belt tensioner. Of course, turn the motor by hand to tdc before doing any disassembly

The aux shift is attached to the pulley below and to the right of the two camshaft pulleys. Line it up so the hole in the pulley is at the one o'clock position. Do this after you have moved the camshaft pulleys into the position where the timing marks on the cam pulleys are lined up with the timing arrows on the block, or the timing mark on the crankshaft is lined up at TDC.

Ok, so I'm guessing I remove the timing belt, Right? Keep the Cams lined up in correct position, then turn the aux pulley to the correcto position of 1:00 ???? Then put timing belt back on???

Do I have that correct?

Thanks everyone for the input.

the last time i had my motor apart, i actually looked at the lobe position on the aux shaft and there is lots of wiggle room. anything between 12:30 and 2:30 will give you clearance. I set my between 1:00 and 2:00.

Ok.. This forum is the BEST ever. Not only is my knocking now gone, but it runs smooth. Now for the other problem. Since I have it started now, the idle is real high. Running at 2000rpm. The idle adjust screw is all the way out and not even touching, so how the heck do I lower the idle with that screw not even touching? Remember I am running a DMSA carb on a 72 Spider. So there are a lot of plugged ports I don't use on the carb.

Any thoughts on this one now?? Thanks a million everyone.
