Transmission 3/4 Gear Sender?

Post by ch33kster »

Hi,

Just on with putting back the transmission and noticed that theres feed between 3rd and 4th gear. Ive read that this connection is for emissions but unsure as to why and how it works (?) also is it necassery to have this on the car?

Thanks folks and I look forward to hearing back from you guys!

I'll interpret your message to referring about the electrical switch on the tranny? It switched power to second set of points, which altered ignition timing. It can be bypassed without any ramifications or configured to gain a few degrees more advance or retard if you so desire

Uh, I thought the 3/4 switch on the tranny was to bump up the idle stop on the carb via a vacuum switch mounted on the driver's side fender. It's supposed to be in effect when decellerating in either 3rd or 4th gears so you wouldn't go lean for extended periods of time and flood the environment with NOx (there's a similar switch on the clutch to ensure it's only in effect when your actually engaged in gear).

If you or your state doesn't care about emissions, you could leave it disconnected, but this feature does give you the advantage of eliminating decel pops especially on those vehicles whose exhausts are....well....a lot less restrictive than stock, let's say.

The second set of points (on vehicles so equipped) were thermally controlled, weren't they?

Thanks guys, I appreciate your quick response.

I live in the UK and don't have a CAT on the exhaust system due to the car being a 1969 California State.

The engines a 1438cc so would it make any difference if I left it disconnected.

This is something I have never come across before.

Cheers once again!

Hi Charles,
So, you have a LHD California spec car in the UK? Interesting.

Well, I'm not exactly sure how the 1969 1438's 3/4 transmission switch worked (if that's indeed what you're referring to in your original question), but if it's anything like the '72 1608, then what I wrote above still applies. Here's how it works:

Like I said above, you could not use the device and you'll probably never know the difference. In fact, there's a good chance it's already been disconnected. Do you have what looks like a solenoid valve with vacuum lines attached hanging off the inside of the driver's side fender (mine was originally missing)? Is there a push-button switch right next to it (it's used to engage the circuit manually so you can set it's "fast idle" condition)?

If the answer to either of those questions is "no", then you're already not using the 3/4 switch.
