a big dent in the hood

if there was a big differance then they would sell a extra thick spacer

There's some theory involved that would suggest you can increase atomization, or velocity. I've never tried it, or followed the theory closely. I would also think there could be some thermal separation that would be of value.

there are several recent posts about members adding a 2nd-spacer and having great success.

What size second spacer? You can purchase carb spacers in various heights. As stated by Maytag, in theory the larger spacer results in better atomization. When completing my resto-mod, I used a 1 inch aluminum spacer with a spiral "venturi".
No issues with hood clearance with the 1 inch spacer and 1.75 inch performance air cleaner.

I will be trying this this weekend when I install my DFEV on my 1.8, the factory ADFA has quite large base plate (looks over 1", haven't measured) & the DFEV has just a mounting plate.

I purchased 2 of Mark's 20mm spacers (as Jim(schnauser) has mentioned he just did) that is about 1.5" & is suppose to bolt on that way with the stock studs.
I haven't measured the overall difference between the 2 carbs. I have the 2.5" air cleaner & hope it still clears the hood, if not I'll go to the 1.75" one.

I'll let you all know how it turns out, sound like from Jim's post he's just tickled with his results. His post:

my first thought is you just double your potential for an air leak

Hi,

One conclusion that's indisputable.

I suppose if you didn't tighten the carb you could have the potential for air leaks, but we've put double spacers on many, many cars with great success. The single carb manifold doesn't flow very evenly and we've found improvement with the carb raised as much as possible. The phenolic spacers are really good at blocking heat from the carb, and two spacers is more effective

Yep. And you only have 50% higher chance of leaks (3 gaskets instead of 2). Not twice as much :D
