Gas tank
Gas tank
So the first time out of the day that I start my car, it will fire right up and hold an idle. Any time after that when I start it, it's hard to start and usually have to give it some gas to get started and keep the idle up so it doesn't die.
I noticed when I take the gas cap off, it has pressure letting out?? That shouldn't be happening should it? I pulled my tank out again last night to get the rear bumper shock out and to do some patch work on the tank itself.
Would this mean that a vapor line is plugged or something? I'm confused as to why there is pressure like that in the tank.

Re: Gas tank
I think kinda weird with pressure coming out unless its really hot out but it should still vent. Was it air coming out or vacume, ie. air coming in? If it was sucking in air, I'd be guessing a blocked vent, some I believe have used a vented gas cap and that has worked.

Re: Gas tank
Seemed like air coming out, I will have to check again tonight. It wasn't a very warm day out either so that's why I was confused too.
Re: Gas tank
It is air coming out of the cap for sure. I put more gas in yesterday and started it up and let it idle for a bit. Shut it off and opened the cap up and air car out just like opening a gas tank on a very hot day.
So I just put the cap back on so it was just about ready to tighten down and left it like that and took a short ride, and when I got back home there was no pressure in the tank this time. Also after letting it sit for awhile it fired right back up unlike how it used to be.
I just can't figure out why the tank is getting pressure like that if the cap is screwed on tight? Is it going to hurt anything leaving my gas cap loose?

Shouldn't hurt anything. If anything it will take some stress off your electric fuel pump.Chihua33 wrote:Is it going to hurt anything leaving my gas cap loose?

Re: Gas tank
Thanks Kent.
It actually seemed to run better with the cap loose like that, could have just been my imagination making that up but I think I will keep running it like that!

Re: Gas tank
You may want to check these tank diagrams to verify things are connected properly. It is possible item 15 isn't working properly.
Re: Gas tank
Funny you should say that. I looked at that last night and it is what I assume to be the original and I thought about replacing that. Wasn't expecting it to be a $40 part though lol
Re: Gas tank
You can test by pulling it off the vent hose and blowing through it both directions. If it is bad someone probably has a good one from a parts car for much less.
Re: Gas tank
Is that part Fiat specific? Or would that be something that I could just pick up at a local parts store?
I'll have to do some searching.
Thanks for the information!

Re: Gas tank
Same here Jay,
When I went back to the link that Kent supplied I noticed that they don't even have the option to buy it. Which I don't think I'd for for that price.
