Engine Oil and Transmission Fluid Questions

I've searched a bit on these two topics, but I'm still confused. I know it is a touchy subject, so I won't ask for more recomendations for the manual trans or engine oil. My owners manual specifies 80w90 and 15w40, but I think I understand the issues surrounding the modern versions of these oils. I would, however, appreciate folks posting links to the pertinent discussions on this board. Seems to me it would be helpful to have them all referenced in one thread for other newbies (like myself) to read. No reason to continue to inflame the passions of the old heads here by asking the same old questions.

Yes, there tons of threads, opinions, etc out there, but that'll do the job.
