I found that the vacumn hose from the intake manifold to air solenoid (between air pump and air injection on top of engine) was old and cracked. I capped off the hose thinking I fixed an air leak but the engine started backfiring. I was thinking that fixing the air leak had caused my jetting to be off. However, when I replaced the vacumn line the backfiring stopped.
Its great that its running fine again, but I'm curious why the air injection made such a difference.
