fuel lines running through the cabin?

Post by steve8462 »

i just pulled the rugs out of my 1979 spider and noticed that it appears that the steel fuel line run along the interior on the drivers side. it looks like it was done at the factory. is this for real? has anybody had any luck rerouting them to a safer route from the front to the back?

when i had my issues http://wwwe.fiatspider.com/f08/viewtopi ... =9&t=17531 I came across a post of someone who had run them completely underneath their car. I was not able to find it for you, but will keep searching.

so it makes me ask, are we sure it is more safe to have them under the car, than in the car? :?:

i think i'm going to attempt to run them in the original location with new metal lines using a general motors style plastic retainer clip here and there to secure them front to back but allowing a little flexibility. i had a tree branch snag one once when i was in my teens way out in the woods with my girlfriend. we were studying, yeah, that's it! we were studying!

The P.O. for my car must have installed the electric fuel pump and new feed line when one of the steel lines sprung a leak. The pipe was never fixed and is actually rusted into pieces now.... great find!
I think the other line is intact and is being used as a return line, but I'm still skeptical.

my return line broke from rust and leaked in my floor board
i had just replaced my carb and dont have a return line any more
so i pluged it up in the Ebay
then it blew and i pluged it behind the cabin.i ran a new fuel line

but now i think i need a return line with a special filter

any thoughts?
i havent had any problems
and dont want to.

The designers were not stupid. Can you think of a safer place for them than down there, tucked under fixed carpeting ? How are they going to get damaged ?

its not so much the damage to the lines as the chance of leaking fuel in the cabin from rotting lines. that's how i discovered mine. i was removing the carpet and noticed the fuel smell. it was leaking right at the rubber grommets where they leave the cabin to go into the trunk area.

but is it safer to have it leak inside, where you'll smell it quickly?

I guess the real question is where is it more likely to find a source of ignition?

Th early Spiders had them outside, which is where I kept them. No reason you wouldn't re-route them there on a later model. If you are planning on keeping the car forever, use stainless or this stuff "Cunifer", a copper-nickel alloy.
