Vapor lock
Vapor lock
Took my 1980 Spider out for the first time, since winter up grades. Had some problems, looking for some idea's. Seemed to run good all day, lots of stop and go traffic, never seemed to over heat. Stoped for lunch, came out, started right up, made it about a block, where it died. Pump the trottle a few times, it would start and die. Pulled supply line from carb., cranked it no fuel. Brought it home on a roll back, thanks Hagerty. After 3-4 hours started right up, seems to run fine.
Here's what has been done, it has been desmogged, one of Marks Empi carb's, single plane intake all holes plugged, 4-2-1 exhaust, no cat, stock resonator and muffler, new Mech. fuel pump, no fuel vapor canister, new plugs, wires and coil, cap and rotor. Should I lose the mech. fuel pump and go electric or what. any thoughts?

Re: Vapor lock
when you removed the vapor cannister, did you plug all of the lines? One way to cure vapor lock is to have fuel recirculating to cool the pump. You could use one of those Chrysler filters with the return line
Re: Vapor lock
Mark, do you have more details on the Fuel filter, your talking about. Like year and model of mopar?

Re: Vapor lock
The metal fuel filter I am using that has a return line nipple is made by PTS (Taiwan) with a part number PG3499 which is a direct replacement for the Wix 33054. I found it at the local auto parts store. My car is a 1975 with the 32/36 EMPI DFEV carb.

Re: Vapor lock
Have you checked the fuel pick-up strainer in the tank? They sometimes get gooey or plugged with junk and get sucked to the bottom of the fuel pick-up. Can cause very erratic behavior

Same thing here, right now; a number of mixed drives on the first truly warm day and after a ten minute stop I got about 100yards then dead. Same mods WITH the 3-port filter. Should have 1/4tank by the odo.

Two beers, including the walk to the pub and back, fixed it just fine...opus10583 wrote:Same thing here, right now; a number of mixed drives on the first truly warm day and after a ten minute stop I got about 100yards then dead. Same mods WITH the 3-port filter. Should have 1/4tank by the odo.

Electric fuel pump is now on the sooner-rather-than-later list.
