Oh my gosh, I had the same problem after replacing my dash. It took me like 10 times to get it clipped in just right. Everything's working now, but the cable is so short and the opening is so small, it took forever to get it clicked in.

The cable on a 76 goes through the upper transmission tunnel behind the center console. The original cable was actually 2 pieces, one from the speedometer to a mileage counter for the EGR, then a second cable to the transmission. Replacement cable eliminates the counter. It does have a grommet that needs to be popped out to allow the cable head to get through.

After buying my car, driving it home the speedo worked fine, although a little jumpy IMO. Went to drive it again, no speedo!

Followed the cable down and it turns out the cable end that connects to the tranny came off the cable itself, and the cable was just hanging there.

Cleaned it all up with acetone, used Super Glue (making sure to put it on the cable a 1/4" back from the end of the cable) to reattach the end and rehooked it to the tranny. All good for now, and the speedo doesn't jump around either... lol
