Just noticed this today as I approached a stop light.
Downshifted from 4th to 3rd and let the engine do the braking for about 5 seconds then dropped from 3rd to 2nd. Looked in rear view mirror and noticed smoke from my tailpipe. Went away once I stepped back into the throttle.
Valve guides??

Rings more likely than valve guides. On decell you build up a whopping vacuum in the cylinders and guess what gets sucked in. Oil past the rings.

It can also get sucked in past seals/guides.
