I had the same issue. But when I was getting the engine/cams degreed in we got the car at TDC and then made a mark on the pulley opposite the 0 mark/pointer on the block. FI 2L engine. Set the timing at 12 deg by the timing light.

I'm no Boy-Racer..... but if I can't take every on-ramp at TWICE the posted limit.... I'm a total failure!

Re: timing mark on alu crank pulley?
Whoops sorry. Yes the 79 onward had the timing mark mounted on the block, kinda below the water pump. I'd be guessing one might be able to do much the same if the cover was on with the earlier cars then take the cover off.. If you want to run without the cover, is there a bolt or something nearby that you could attach a fabricated pointer and use that for future reference?

Re: timing mark on alu crank pulley?
This is pretty much the reason why I don't put timing marks on them.. there are at least 3 different timing pointer locations, some people don't use timing covers, some people use different markers, etc.
If you're loosing the timing belt cover, you could fashion a timing pointer of your own. Probably easiest to locate it on the two rightmost bolts on the front crank seal cover, similar to our sensor mounts:
Of course, you could also change to a different front crank seal cover which has the mount for a timing pointer. These came 1979-on.
For what its worth, if anyone wants the stock timing marks on their pulleys, I will mark them before we ship them out. I have a jig for it, no problem.

Re: timing mark on alu crank pulley?
yes correct your Belt cover has them, there are 3 marker points TDC 5 Deg and 10 Deg so this doesn't help youMaybe I haven't looked closely enough: there's a mark on the block? Mine is a '76 1.8L. but I thought the only mark was the one on the belt cover, which is not being reinstalled.
much at this point unless you use the belt cover and stock pulley as a reference point to label your new pulley and
pointer .

Re: timing mark on alu crank pulley?
As a first time Fiat engine builder last year I went round and round with this issue and it caused real grief. A buddy told me there is a TDC marking key on the block of my 2L that helped!
1978 Spyder 1800 make that 2L! Finally making real progress!

Re: timing mark on alu crank pulley?
I'm thinking the timing mark on the seal carrier might be a pain in the arse to see when timing. Do you use a timing light that shows advance ? I'm thinking the marks on the cover assist in helping get the timing close to spec with a standard timing light.
It looks like the pic shows the engine at TDC.
I will get the engine at TDC and before putting the head on, I'll turn the cams so the holes on the cam wheels line up with the raised line on the cam towers. Plop the head on and if I have not hacked the cam lobe off the aux shaft set the aux shaft to the 1 o'clock position or so.
