I went to Autozone and bought a muffler repair kit for under $6. It came with some metal screen patches and exhaust joint/crack sealer putty. I tried the screen+ epoxy combo to cover the hole but long story short decided to chuck that portion of the kit. I decided to get out the pop rivet gun and drill. Tin snipped some extra sheet metal I had to make a patch. Used 4 steel pop-rivets to attach the patch and then used the sealer from the kit to seal the joints of the patch. Will take pics tomorrow to show my handy work off.

I've got a 79. No cat no resonator, just straight pipe from front to muffler. It's not noisy at all. Quite tame actually. Muffler is a cheap $50 or so 20 year old meineke.

Didn't last even a few weeks. Started the car up this morning and bam the car was super loud. 3 out of 4 rivets came out metal patch was hanging by the one rivet which was in good metal. Went around to autozone and got a muffler wrap. The cost is adding up , $12 so far I spent on trying to patch this POS up. Will def be ordering my muffler this week! Thinking silverline ANSA. 8)

I got a standard replacement from Vick. It was pretty quiet because the outlet had a bend so the exhaust was pointed straight DOWN, thus trapping a lot of the sound waves under the car - particularly at lower speeds around town. This simple feature produces a LOT of sound reduction, as I learned when I cut off the down bend so I could install a chrome exhaust tip! So if QUIET is your goal, get a muffler with an outlet that points DOWN. Quiet was not my goal, and the down bend looked a bit dweeby, but it WAS QUIET! Of course, it there are leaks forward of the muffler, all bets are off.

Good Luck.

only problem with down facing mufflers is when backing up on dusty gravel or dirt roads. what a mess it blows up all over the car.
