i have a 1980 124. one front shock was loose,. no nut or cap washer, not sure why
anyways i have a photo here and i am wondering what is missing other then the cap washer and nut
i do plan on replacing them but for now i am just going to put this one back on
as u can see the rubber dormant is there but there is a lot of space yet to get to the threds
is the dome washer is all i need. or is there another rubber?

Those are the original WayAss shocks and were a very good shock. Shocks can get a little harder over time. I have some original rubber doughnuts for those shocks if you need them. The newer style rubber shock doughnuts are harder and have a smaller surface area that does not interface well with the shock perches.

Went out to the shop and looked at mine. Another rubber up top and then a washer. Double nutted.

those old hydraulic shocks will seize if they've sat for very long, causing an uncontrollable ride. Gas shocks are a better choice as replacements

thanks every one, this car has sat for 8 years, so there no doubt that it seize then, i have never rode in anything so rough

I agree with Mark, KYB is readily availible in most part stores or on line, they range from 22 to 26 dollars per shock vs 100 plus for Koni. Although Koni makes a great track shock, but it is pretty stiff for general use.
