Hey y'all:
I put in the new rear-main seal this evening, and I'm uncertain it is correct.
It was quite difficult to get over the crank, and now that it's on, it is QUITE snug. In doing some searching on the site here, I've discovered there are two different seals available. Could I have the wrong one? would it go on at all if it were wrong? is this the way it SHOULD look?
And as long as I'm at it: should the pilot bearing be sticking-out that far?
Does this rear main seal look correct?

Re: Does this rear main seal look correct?
Thanks Narfire.
I think the 2L is supposed to be the larger diameter seal... but the way it fits should give us SOME indication, huh?
I'm wondering if i need to just push the lip where the seal contacts the crank FORWARD, so that it angles the other direction?
I dunno.

It looks to me like you have the smaller ID rear seal in there. It is possible to install, I know, I had to do it on a racecar in the middle of the race, when we did not have the right seal. It held for the duration of the race...

Re: Does this rear main seal look correct?
Took a pic. The seal is flush with the carrier and the pilot sticks out about...1/8 1/4 inch perhaps. The engine came from my 80.
Hope this helps

But wouldn't the smaller i.d. Be correct for my 76 1800?vandor wrote:It looks to me like you have the smaller ID rear seal in there. It is possible to install, I know, I had to do it on a racecar in the middle of the race, when we did not have the right seal. It held for the duration of the race...

Re: Does this rear main seal look correct?
Looking at the two mid 70's 1800s(?) I have on the ground, the pilot bearing sticks out further that I would have guessed, about like yours. But your seal does not look correct, something is wrong there.
Working the lip of the seal over the crank often takes a fine touch. I use a small smooth screwdriver or a feeler gauge to help get the lip started over the sealing surface. I would yank it out, if it has been improperly installed, I would get another.

Re: Does this rear main seal look correct?
so, I ran home for lunch and took a measurement on the tail of the crank. it's 74mm.
Half of the information I read online would lead me to believe that the diameter changed from 70mm to 74mm only for the 2L. And IAP clearly subscribes to this (that's where I bought this gasket kit when my first several choices were out of stock)
But the other half suggests that the diameter changed mid-year '76, on the 1800.
Well, I'm here to affirm that my '76 1800 DOES have the 74mm crank-tail.
I tried to get one from Csaba just now.... but My phone dropped the call twice... so I gave up 'til I'm back to a land-line.
I'll report back when I've got the correct one installed.

Re: Does this rear main seal look correct?
If you look real close on the seal there are small raised numbers in the rubber seal that give the dimensions of the seal. The outer diameter where it interfaces/presses into the aluminum seal carrier, the height or thickness of the seal itself usually around 7mm then the inner dimeter, or the diameter of the shaft the seal is designed for.
I think you have a 70mm crank seal on a 74mm crank.

Re: Does this rear main seal look correct?
The difference in crank diameters has to do with the change from M10 flywheel bolts to M12. The bolt patterns are the same but the bolts are bigger, thus the need for a larger diameter.
It is my belief that the whole engine was re-worked at the same time. 29mm crank nose to 30mm, different oil pan pattern, etc. This was not a 1756cc to 1995cc change, it happened during the 1756's life cycle.
Certainly a lot of confusion surrounding these sort of things. That's why I never use year models as any kind indication of what engine people have, not to mention the many mix and match combinations you can come up with for these things.

Jason,
I do not know if this is just a lot of mix and match, but it seems to me that those changes did not occur at the same time.
The 29mm crank nose seems to have go onto early '77, but the newer pan gasket happened sometime in '76. It would just make too much sense to change everything at the same time
