Oil dripping from bottom of oil pan.
Oil dripping from bottom of oil pan.
I know it ran there from somewhere. This is a new leak on a car that was little used and well taken care of. It is dripping from about 3 inches or so back from the oil plug. My first thought is the pan gasket, but I am curious what else it might be in that area. Anyone have this before?
Re: Oil dripping from bottom of oil pan.
When I say 3 inches or so back from the oil pan, I meant that it was 3 inches toward the front of the car from the oil plug. Sorry if I was confusing.

look around the base of the block for a leak running down from above anywhere
you cant realy see the rear main seal or front seal
buy over time they can go bad

$6.20 for the gasket here

I was looking at picking one up myself, luckily no leaks yet

FInally got to torquing the oil pan back down. It is still leaking. I looked around underneath and can tell the leak is coming from the front of the pan or above the front of the pan, but I cant see under the timing cover enough to know if it's the seal or not. Thanks for the help.

there is an ultra violet chemical that is safe to add to your oil that will help track leaks.

You don't need an ultra voilet dye. Pull timing cover and see what is leaking.

Re: Oil dripping from bottom of oil pan.
My mechanic used that dye when I had the vehicle inspected.
Helped identify precisely all the leaks it was suffering:
- pan gasket
- front seals
- small vapour breather hose beneath the intake manifold
- gearbox gasket
- differential gasket
Removes the guess work, particularly when the engine is covered in old oil, road grime, and grease.
