Seat Belt Mounting

Post by LondonSpider »

Hello All,

I've searched all 38 previous threads on seat belts and haven't found the information I'm looking for so here goes.

Can some kind soul post a photo showing how the retractable seat belts were mounted on '79 cars or thereabouts? Behind the rear seat back I have the original brackets (as shown in the photo below) but am unclear on how to mount and route retractable belts. It's not obvious to me how the reel can be mounted without obstructing the rear seat back. I want to fit retractable belts and feed them through the guides in the back of the rear seat as per the original setup.

Thanks in advance.

Here's a pic of them mounted in my 78, no back seat to see how they fit to it but appear to be in original position

Thanks Doc.

What I can't work out is that in my car the rear seat back presses hard against the seat belt mounting brackets. So it wouldn't be possible to mount a reel on the front of the bracket and keep the seat back.

Perhaps my brackets aren't original.

Can anybody else enlighten me?

Hi, just a thought. Mine (1974) are mounted inside the seat belt retractor mounting braket you've pictured.
The belt is then threaded through the provision in the rear seat and passes through a seat belt holder I had made up.

It didn't originally have retractables in it so I made up a template of the retactable mounting plate from a later model. Cut, bent and welded them in. Engineer approved and has been working 100% for nearly 20 years.

Heres the best pic i have (of the holder that is).

Thanks for your responses guys.

Snoopy, you raise a good question. I have the 'wrong' rear seat i.e. one without seat belt guides rear fitted. It must have been swapped by a previous owner. If I source a correct rear seat back (with the seat belt guides) will it have a cutout space to accomodate the seat belt reel?

Thanks Snoopy. A picture paints a thousand words. All is clear now. I just need to source a seat back like that in tan/beige.
