Power cuts out during hill climb

Post by OneBadStud »

So, for the last few months I've been putting everything right with my 74 spider's electrical issues and fixed all the known bugs. Converted to a single point setup, put in a new timing belt/tensioner bearing, voltage regulator and replaced old, ratty fuel lines. Now I'm finally able to drive it a bit and am having lots of fun, with one exception. I can't climb a hill without it cutting out. It's filled with premium, new fuel filter, plugs and tuned. Points are set at .017".

This probably isnt the issue but I had a stall upon climbing an incline right outside my garage. I pulled the manuall choke knob out just a tiny bit and it cured it. Im talking maybe 1/4".

Best of luck

sounds like low fuel pressure; may be a weak pump or deteriorated fuel lines between the tank and pump

I've fiddled a little with the carb, following artigue's guidelines, timed when I changed the belt and replaced the fuel line from the tank to pump. I'm leaning towards low fuel pressure too. The pump rattles a little and I have no idea how old it is. I'll replace it and see what happens. Hopefully, I'll have a trip report soon.

If it was me, rather than change a bunch of things I would test some things first. "T" into the fuel line near the carb and run a line with a cheapy vacuum/pressure gauge and tape it to the wiper arm. NOw go climp a hill. If pressure drops off while climbing you have a problem. You can then take same cheapy gauge and "T" into line before pump. Now go climb hill. If vacuum develops while climbing you have a problem before pump, like plugged screen/filter in tank or rotten line BEFORE pump.
