intermittent stalling

Post by rkane »

I have '76 124. I stored it all winter with a full tank and stabill. I got it out about 2 weeks ago and twice it quit at a stop. Once it started quickly the second time it took a little cranking. It ran ok for a couple of days then it quit again at a stop and wouldn't start.( i loosened gas cap no sign of vaccuum and it didn't help) After a half hour I finally had it towed home. I pumped the carb and didn't see fuel squirt in the carb. I took the fuel feed off and bumped the ignition and fuel pumped from the fuel line. I replaced and did the same with fuel return and fuel squirted from the carb. replaced lines and pumped the carb and fuel squirted in the carb. Tried ignition and car started. Drove it around town for a half hour with multible stops and it ran fine. Next day drove the car to the inspection station about 7 miles away. It ran fine and passed inspection. Any ideas. It has an electric fuel pump.

I had a problem with intermittent stopping once. I finally noticed I had a tiny leak on one of the radiator hoses, and when it got hot, squirted coolant on the coil.

If you did not see fuel squirt from the carb, then it was out of fuel. Your fuel pump circuit is wired into the oil pressure light with a relays, so after 36 years you may have a flaky relay, or connection. If the fuel pump is original then it could be suspect also.
Next time this happens you could try to jump the fuel pump directly to the battery. If it does not run, then you have a bad pump. If it runs and the car starts then you have a problem in the pump's electrical circuit.
