So couldn't see anything wrong with the springs or the valve stem, so I've decided I've had my fun learning a little more what makes this engine tick and I'm going to put it back together.
So I got the cambox back on and was going to put my new timing belt on and realized that my exhaust sprocket had a good 1/8" of play. Checked the intake, solid as a rock...hmmmmm I think turning the sprocket back and forth I get a bit of a tapping noise.
Is it possible this is the culprit?
We tried tightening the bolt, no good. Also tried just taking it off so we could see what could be broken or worn, but still no luck.
First valve repair, tips/tricks?
Re: First valve repair, tips/tricks?
if it's a plastic pulley, chuck it and get an all-metal sprocket. Those pulleys with loose center hubs can make a tremendous amount of noise. Plus your cam timing is all over the place
Re: First valve repair, tips/tricks?
Great thank you! Can't find anything on International, but looks like Vick's has em. Doesn't state if it's metal or not so I'll probably give them a call.So Cal Mark wrote:if it's a plastic pulley, chuck it and get an all-metal sprocket. Still nervous about getting the old one off We have an air wrench, tried using it on a low setting so we didn't do any damage. Should we just crank the sucker up till the thing finally lets go?
O, and does the nut turn off counter-clockwise or clockwise?
Re: First valve repair, tips/tricks?
make sure the cam doesn't spin when using an air wrench, and the bolt comes off counter-clockwise.
Re: First valve repair, tips/tricks?
Ok, got the new pulley on order, should be here by next week I'm guessing.
I have another problem now though, I went and tightened one of my cambox bolts down to far and actually stripped out the hole the bolt goes in .
Is there a way to fix this?

Phew, Great thank you guys! So it looks like I'll definitely be replacing the exhaust pulley, looks like the Intake is worn too so I'm guessing it wouldn't be a bad Idea at all to do that also.
IAP want's $45 for the stock plastic one while vicks had it listed for only $17 (couldn't find a metal one on either site) but after I ordered it they emailed me back that their supplier had discontinued it .
I haven't posted on here yet asking others if they happen to have a one or both so I'll get on that now, otherwise I guess I'll have to go with IAP's plastic ones.

I'm pretty sure AutoRicambi has metal intake and exhaust cam gears for about $36
Re: First valve repair, tips/tricks?
So got the hole tapped. Was curious if anyone new what the proper torque for the cambox is? Couldn't find it in the service manual.
Also I heard it's a good idea to replace the idler bearing. It's not making any noise and appears to work fine, but I don't know the last time it was replaced.
BTW, did the plastic cam pulleys originally come on the 124?

My '81 FI has metal cam cogs. They look old enough to be stock.
My manual at home has all the torque settings (at work right now). Will check and post later tonight for you.
