timing the engine

Post by fiat218 »

i have a 1980 carb 2000
i am wondering how to u do the timing when there no marks, other then lining up the cam etc,\

when the engine is cold it turns over fast and starts, when it hot and u turn it off and try starting it, it acts like it to far advance ( i think ) and or as if it was flood and turns over in a boging way
does this make sense

thanks

So Jim, you don't have timing marks for the crank? The timing indicator is down on the left side of the engine, if you are looking at the engine from the front.

If it is cranking hard hot, like yoiu have guessed, it is probably too far advanced. If you can't find marks, pull cap, crank engine, watch which way rotor turns, loosen dist mounting and turn dist the same way a small amount. Thjis will retartd timing, If it still cranks hard, repeat. Really, you should find, or make, marks.

should have a set of timing marks on an angle piece at about the 10 o'clock position facing the crank pulley.
