Brava 2L engine interchangeable?

Post by oebb »

Hi!
New on the forum. I'm seriously looking into buying a spider. The most interesting object (not too many here in Sweden) has a Brava 131 2L carb engine mounted in a 1981 spider (sorry for the unprecise spec). From what I understand this is more or less the same engine as the original 1979 spider engine - is this correct? He claims that there are no modifications done to the transmission line.
Are there other pro's or con's with the Brava engine (harder to get parts)?

One more thing - the seller warned me that there is a small amount of "blue smoke" in the exhausts on higher revs and a bit of an oil consumption. No problem with compression test though. What's the most likely oil leakage problem?

Thanks in advance, really looking forward to get my hands dirty.

Hey Mikael, Welcome to the forum. I asked a question earlier about my '79 Spider that definitely has a 124 engine with a Brava head ( http://www.fiatspider.com:16080/f08/vie ... f=5&t=2321 ). Obviously they are close enough that the head is interchangeable. Mark apparently has the documentation on that (see post) and maybe he can verify how close they are. They only differences that I know of is the Brava is 6hp stronger and the head doesn't have a reed valve.

The question about the blue smoke is probably not related to the Brava engine at all. It's interesting that it occurs at high revs though. I would think that you would see blue smoke when you startup or when your idle drops down.

Hi DJ!
Thanks for your info and pointer. No reed valve and 6 extra in the engine doesn't hurt. I'll know more about the smoke in two weeks when I'll see the car myself and hopefully becomes an owner.
