Brakes bled enough?

Post by Fiat88 »

I bled the brakes with my friend today. We put the car on 4 jackstands, 2 stands under the axle to open the comp. Started with the RP side then RD side, then FP side, and then FD side. Fluid came out and didn't see any bubbles, checked level of fluid in reservoir. Pumped the pedal to check firmness,, it feels better then it did but how firm should it be. If I pump the pedal before starting the car should the pedal be pumped until it gets really hard? Pedal still feels soft but car seems to stop fine. Is their a way to measure how far the pedal goes down.

The last time I bled my brakes I chased an air bubble for a while. I think you may have bled them backward .I was always told to start with the the closest wheel and work your way to the right rear. I don't know If that makes a differance .If you have an air pocket midway in the line you will have to work it to the caliper. You will get fluid before you get air. My daughter got a good workout before I had mine bled right.

I went out to the garage and checked the pedal again. When I pumped it with the car off it actual felt pretty firm. Much better then before! :) So even if the fluid is coming out clear with no bubbles, air can still be trapped?

Brakes are bled starting from the wheel furtherest from the master cylinder - he did it correctly although I have no idea if he bled each wheel long enough. It is also a good idea to make several passes around the car.

Well I guess I have been doing it wrong for 30 years .My bad :? , but it has alwats worked out. Yes, I think I made it around to all wheels 3 times and on the second lap I got the last bit of air. The third was just for fun.
