Intake and Carb Swap

Post by Dougieb »

Hi again,

I am swapping out the DHSA carb and intake for my 72 Spider for a 34DMSA carb and intake off a 74 model.
I am doing this mainly because the DHSA has a "burble" when the secondary opens and a hot start problem.
But I will not mind any increase in performance ( ha ha).

1) The first problem I have is how in the heck to get the intake manifold out. I drained the coolant and managed to get all of the nuts loose but I am having a hard time getting the intake out. It is hung up on the studs because it hits on the brake booster. I have pulled and pushed on the motor to try and gain the angle to get it out but have been unsuccessful so far. Do I need to loosen a motor mount? Any suggestions?

2) The second question is what to do with the vacuum ports in the new intake? Artigue says to cap off all but the brake booster. What about the canister? What is it for? Is there anything else that I need? Also, what is the solid pipe coming out of the side? What is the best way to cap that?

3) On the DMSA Carb, there are 3 brass lines on the left side. I assume the one is gas in. One is gas return. What is the third? And what about the vacuum lines coming off the base plate of the carb? (not shown in pic) What about the vacuum line on the right side? Do I need these at all? I assume not but just want to make sure.
As you can see from the pic below, the new carb is missing one of the studs for the breather. Where can I get a new stud? if the threads are buggered up, can I helicoil it of will I need to drill it out for a larger size?

That is about it. Thanks for all of the help.

Thanks, Joe for the info.
I am glad to know where the charcoal canister hose goes.

One other question.......
The hard metal tube...... what was it used for on a '74?
My friend (who does not know Fiats) thought it might be for an EGR valve.
I have no idea.
I am currently capping off all of the unused ports. (don't like fittings sticking out without being used)
The metal fitting is some sore of banjo fitting.
What is the best way to take that out so I can cap it?
My friend suggested some heat and then a manual impact to try and loosen the threads and spin it in the fitting.

Any suggestions?
Thanks again.

the pluming department at MENARDS has plugs

you could hack saw it off a bit long and cap the end
if you can stand the banjo look

i went to sears and bought a huge screwdriver
with a square shaft for vicegrips for my boat motor

vice up the intake and lean into it

or a pipe wrench after hacking off the head of the bolt and removing the banjo

Well, I got mine off.
Below is the pic of the parts and the tools involved.
It would have been easier to put some heat to the tube when trying to take it out but I have never been know for doing things the easy way.

The banjo bolt comes out with a 10mm allen wrench.
The banjo bolt is 16mm x 1.5 thread.......so..... I am going back to NAPA to get another one. ha ha
(And they thought I was crazy when I needed just one!)

Anyways, I hope this visual helps some people out.
Thanks,
