Geezz, if it's not one thing its another. I like to tinker and work on my car but this is getting rediculous.
1978 1800 with 79/electronic ignition.
The other day on the way home from work the dizzy vac advance diaphram blew out. Kind of aggervates me because the vac advance was brand new from IAP not more than two months ago. I even made a heat shield for it, wrapped the vac advance in headder wrap, then an aluminum shroud around that.
On the way home after the blow out, the car idled very low and I had to keep a foot on the gas while stopped to keep from stalling. At the time I didn't know it was the vac advance. Last night I sucessfully changed out the vac advance with another one WITHOUT REMOVING THE DIZZY, it took an inspection mirror and an offset screwdriver, but it worked.
On the way to work today the car had a loopy/fluctuating idle. For the most part it would stay around the 850 rpm range plus or minus 150 rmps. At one stop light it suddenly dipped and stayed fluctuating around 300rpms. A few stop lights later it suddenly jumped up to 1100rpms and flucutated there.
My primary suspect is the ignition controll module, and second, the ignition pickup unit. But both the controll module and pick up units are fairly new, less than 3000 miles on each, clean bright contacts and dielectric grease when installed.
I will switch the controll module with a new one I carry as a spare before embarking on the trip home
I never touched the carb as it is properly adjusted. Any suggestions.

Matt, kinda sounds like how engs act when the pickup wires are bad. Could you hook up an ohm meter to the pick-up wires, then apply suction to the vac adv? You should see a smoothe transition, with consistantcy. Also check for open in wires by wiggeling them...

Problem solved, carburetor to manifold bolts loose.
