Idle Issue when hot .

Post by Jurgen »

I converted my 76 spider to electronit distributor did the timing belt water pump new plugs shes running good but when it gets hot the idle goes up between 1500-2000 i put a new return spring still nothing . The timing is set at 10* and stays at 10* when cold when it gets hot that the rpm creaps to 1500-2000 timing is at 20* if i push on the throttle arm kind of hard i feel like a little pop or as if something clips in and idle drops to about 800 or soo . Do i need to rebuild the carb or what could that be ?

the 76 has a cable and the cable may have started to fray. Disconnect the cable from the carb and see if it still sticks

sometimes the advance mechanism inside the distributor sticks. check to see that the weights move freely. sometimes you have to clean them and put some never seize on them.

it could be your idel jet has some crud and it leans out and gets it hot

loosen you mixture screw 2 turns
turn it back in 2 turns

this may free up the crud

It could also be your choke/fast-idle (they are related).

I did have a similar problem for years. I was never able to fix it, and
just lived with it. Changing carbs (from ADHA to DFAV) finally got rid
of the problem. As well as helping performance noticibally.

I want to say thank you for this post. I am new to this forum and am having a very simular problem. My car runs fine on short runs throughout the day. I drove for an hour and a half recently and it started reving up to 2K at idle and oddly enough then it would die at the next light. The next morning it ran fine.

I have a great mechanic and I try to tell him about it, but it's not easy to go, "Drive it for an hour or two on the freeway, and it will start acting up at stop lights." I was hoping his experience would shed light into it, but this thread gave great insite I can share. Thank you!

Well that poping i figured it out it was the set screw that the throttle arm rests on when closed now that i moved it it wont stay running when cold i have to stay on the throttle a little till it warms up and when i am at lights i have to lift up on the gas pedal to get the idle to drop to about 1000 or so . But before it wouldt slow down when lifting on the pedal . I still think there is something binding the shaft doest move that smooth .
