First valve repair, tips/tricks?

Hey guys, so I asked a while back about this and I Finally found time to take it on. I believe Mark said that do do any repairs besides replacing the vale guide I won't need to only remove the cam box.

Is this pretty straight forward then or are there a couple cool tricks you guys use to make it go smoother?

Also I'm having trouble getting my Cam sprocket off. I noticed the manual suggests using a special tool, but can't find it online. I'm assuming they need to come off?

Not quite sure actually. To be honest I was hoping I would just be able to see what was causing the noise once I got to the valve-train. The first time I heard the noise it sounded like something came loose in the engine, not a good noise... Afterwords it was a intermittent ticking noise.

Is this a poor assumption that I'll just be able to see the problem once I remove the cambox, or the head if necessary?

these valves turn or slowly spin
if one is bent a bit it makes noise then goes away and back
several compresion tests are in order
take it for a cruse
listen to it
do tests when sounding different

of corse im just talking and have no real education

go for new valves like stainless steel and guides
when you do everything correct people arent sure youve done anything at all (futurama)

Actually the noise is always there, regardless of RPM or anything, so I'm assuming something else.

BEFORE YOU TEAR THE ENGINE/HEAD DOWN, LETS FIND OUT WHERE THE NOISE IS COMING FROM. GET A PIECE OF SMALL(3/8 ID OR SO) DIAMETER HOSE AND PUT ONE END UP AGAINST THE HEAD AND LISTEN TO SEE IF YOU CAN NARROW DOWN THE AREA. TRY IT AT IDLE AND AT SAY 3000 RPM.A SET OF MECHANICS STETHASCOPE I THOUGHT WAS REASONABLE AT ABOUT $20.00 LIKELY YOU WON'T SEE ANYTHING WHILE THE ENGINE IS STOPPED IF YOU HAVE'NT DONE A FEW OF THESE IN THE PAST.

did you replace the timing belt before it made any noise?
if the aux shaft wasnt it the right place when replacing the belt it has a hole that needs to be at "1 oclock"
or it will sound bad or worse

yup we did take a screwdriver and later a stethoscope and it's definitely in the top end on the exhaust side. Either cylinder one or two.

if you can hear it in the center of the head, I'd remove the spark plugs first. Then lower each piston and see if the top of the piston is dinged

phew :) , funny I never thought of doing that but yes it's coming from the cambox itself. We poked around a bit and the closer you get to the cam itself the louder. That's an awesome tip tho thank you!

Mechanic did mention the first time listing to it that there was a small chance it could be a bearing. He seemed pretty sure after listing to it a few more times that it seemed pretty likely there was something in the valve-train that had broken or come loose.

So pardon my total mechanical ignorance, but exactly keeps the valve-assembly together? When I remove the cambox, what keeps it all from popping out? If there's a part broken, why does the dam thing still work at all? :oops:

no bearings on the cam. The valve spring has a retainer that keeps it together. You could have a broken valve spring or a flat cam lobe

is it possible you're just hearing a mis-adjusted cam-follower clearance on the ex-valve of #1 or #2?
I'm no Boy-Racer..... but if I can't take every on-ramp at TWICE the posted limit.... I'm a total failure!

Hey guys, just kind of an update. I work two different jobs so I only get about one or two days a week to work on her.

Got the cambox off. everything looks kosher so far. Assuming it's pretty straight forward to remove the springs, ( i.e. spring compressor)?

Also don't want to get ahead of myself, but after I get everything back together is it going to be a chore getting the cams lined up and timed properly?
