Need a quiter muffler-recommend something?

Post by Fiat88 »

I hate the sound of my exhaust as its too loud around town. My mother says she can hear my car a mile away. The PO put on some kind of big pipe muffler-says turbo on it. I have a straight pipe going to it. What's a good system I can put on, not too pricy, though. How can I get a quieter ride? Thanks.

I have an Ansa twin tip that I really like. Used it along with a Magnaflow cat. Not a bargain basement setup but I like the sound. I think you can pick up an factory type muffler for around $80.00 from IAP or AW in NJ. George

the factory exhaust is quiet but a bit more restrictive. you could always take it to a good muffler shop and have them put a quieter aftermarket universal muffler on there, and check to see if there is room for a small resonator.

Well now I really need a new muffler! Was checking the level of the diff fluid today and found that the muffler is totally rusted out. Has a hole the size of a ping pong ball in the bottom. Wasn't like that a few months ago but I guess the thing has been bad for a long time cause its been welded in afew places.

Anyone have any tips on how to patch the muffler for now? My car budget this month is depleted, since I'm also paying my payments for my new 500. Think some sheet metal, steel pop rivets and exhaust epoxy would be ok until the end of the month? Driving locally of course a few times a week.

Gonna put my MacGyver skills to work tomorrow on it and report back.

Planning ahead for what muffler I should buy. Anyone have experience with the ANSA Silverline mufflers?

There are a few good threads with exhaust option info on them, if you do a search. The problem is that none of them have sound files attached, so there is no good way to compare this very subjective subject.

While you are shopping for a new muffler and set up. I recall a long time ago buying some tape specifically made for the muffler. Not a great fix and I would not reccommend. However, if you are gettng a new system this may be a good temp fix to apply a couple layers of the tape over rusted areas with holes until you have the details of the new system sorted out.

I have Vicks header into a 2.5" pipe with a resonator and performance muffler. It is a liitle loud but sounds great.
Buon giro a tutti! - enjoy the ride!
