POR15

Post by 4uall »

Just picked up my POR15 kit. Curious to know if anyone has had some experience with this product. Looking to apply it this weekend. Also looking for storage of the POR15 advice after use (if possible).

Most importantly, do not get it on your skin. Long sleeve shirt, gloves, hat, mask. The stuff will last forever.
I know some do not care for it, but after I scraped off all the tar from under the car I covered it with POR15 and it's held up well. Trick is getting the surface clean first. Use cheap brushes because you will throw them away after one use. The stuff drys quickly, so you may want to pour out only as much as your going to apply. Once the can is open I would either cover it with saran wrap before putting the lid back on, or more recently I've poured it into air tight tupper ware containers to keep it from going bad. Works great, but don't tell the wife.

I'm going to assume that air is the enemy in preserving the leftover product in the original containers. If that is so, then maybe use marbles, or large ball bearings or some other clean stuff to drop into the bottles, to bring the POR up to fill line.

A trick in the regular paint industry is to place plastic down in the can on top of the leftover paint and then up the sides and overlapping the rim. That way, when you put the lid back on, not much oxygen is getting to the paint.

After closing a paint can back up, making sure the top is fully secured, I always tip the can upside down for a few seconds to make sure the paint inside wets and seals the lid. Poor fit and air infiltration from the outside is a killer. This approach has worked really well for me for years now.

any rust inhibiter actvates with air
so sealing it with half a can of air will set it"over time"

Yes understood. I like that idea about the saran wrap, that is pretty cool, and can be easily used at home. Back in the day, in the factory, we used to evacuate various chemical storage cans with nitrogen, which protected the contents from the oxidizing effects of air.
