Re: Leaking diff
What year is your car. Before going further the later model spiders have a vent cap above the axel on the drivers side. Depending on the fluid level in the diff and how hard you corner splashing things around this will leak out the top and travel towards the diff. It will look like a leak at the axel by the pumpkin if your not aware of the vent cap. I only say this because I scratched my head for a week trying to figure out why my diff was leaking in that spot only to come up with a little overspill from the vent cap.
Buon giro a tutti! - enjoy the ride!

Re: Leaking diff
Not sure how the set up is on the 77. I think 78 - 82 use one type and that same type may be OK for the 83-85. I know thoase years do have a vent cap. If you go above the axel on the drivers side and start at the pumpkin with your hand on top of the diff moving towards the drivers side whell you will feel a 1/2 inch round bump a few inches from the differential. If you have it on your car it may be covered with a lot of grim. That 1/2 inch bump will be your vent cap if you have one.

Re: Leaking diff
Degrease and clean up the diff housing, let it dry, then 'puff' talcum powder or similar around the diff. Go for a drive then see where the oil has leaked from or spilled from.

Re: Leaking diff
If I say the Talcum powder on the rear end is a great idea does that change any of my political views? Seriously, it is a simple and effective way to find a leak.

Yep - It was the only way I could find the hair line crack on the sump, were the sump plug was welded to the sheet metal.TX82FIAT wrote:If I say the Talcum powder on the rear end is a great idea does that change any of my political views? Seriously, it is a simple and effective way to find a leak.
