Hi,
I have a 7/77 build '78 Spider, driver's side alternator.
I can't possibly contort to read the engine ID on the oil filter mount, and have learned I can't trust anything or anyone concerning the history of this car.
Is there some other location to read the block/engine ID from?
Thanks,
Mark

Re: Engine ID
In a word, no! It's stamped into the side. I recently had to provide an engine number for an inspection, I couldn't get close enough to read it, but I could reach the area to give it a good clean. I was then able to take a photo with a digital camera and blow up the image to read the number.opus10583 wrote:Is there some other location to read the block/engine ID from?

Re: Engine ID
It is a pain to see for sure (mines a 10/77) what I did was cleaned the area good & then wiped the area with a dirty rag to fill in the number w/ dirt/grease & then contorted to see with a flash light from all kinds of different angles (me & the flash light) till I was able to make out all the bits (never all at one time)
I verified that it was the correct engine to the car....NOW IF I HAD ONLY WRITTEN IT DOWN!!
I like the camera idea! & maybe work a mirror into the scenario

Re: Engine ID
Thank you both!
That's what I've been afraid of. But you've both given me very good tips!
...Is this the only reason to move the alternator to the passenger side?
Thanks again,
Mark

Re: Engine ID
The alternator is not hard to remove or refit, maybe 1/2 an hour all up. Pull it out, get the number, write it down, refit alternator.opus10583 wrote:...Is this the only reason to move the alternator to the passenger side?

I always find it is much easier to get a camera into those places than a head! Take as many pictures as you can in there and look at them on a computer later, you are bound to capture the number in one of them.

Re: Engine ID
Hi,
A couple of sessions with a toothbrush and engine cleaner, plus a camera (and sharpen and +contrast and negative) did the trick; thank you all.
My '78 has the correct engine: The mythic, unreferenced 132A1.040.6 ...That would not have been my bet.
Now I can order the correct lightened flywheel to go with my new old transmission.
Thanks again,
Mark
