removing radio console on 82

Post by ylbill »

I'm going to be removing the radio console on my 82 spider this weekend. I'm going to try and fix it up if possible. I'm also going to install a new radio. I was just looking for any tips anyone might have before I get into it. Thanks!

Is yours the regular console, or the factory padded unit? I have experience with the padded unit (it has to come out with the upper and lower consoles together) but not the standard console.

There are 4 screws where the radio console meets the lower console. 2 on each side and maybe 1 more with AC on the right. The trick is to raise the rear towards the engine upwards, and the front will side out. Disconnect the wires from the devices and thats it. Hope this helps.

Sorry for the double image post. I wanted to show the console, because I'm not actually sure which console version I have. I ended up posting the same image twice. Thanks for your help!

yes theres 4 screws along the bottom
keep the wires for the hazard switch in memory, mabey rubberband then togeter.
my cig lighter wire dosent have a quick connect
so i lay the console on the drivers floor then get in there for working on things
when you do everything correct people arent sure youve done anything at all (futurama)

The picture answers my question. You have a combination of both types of consoles! The bottom is the factory stitched leather, the top is the standard type. I'm guessing it was done because taking out the console with the leather cover is such a pain. You'd have to disconnect the linkage at the tranny, raise the dash slightly and slide the two parts out as a unit. Without the linkage disconnected it can't slide back far enough to clear the dash. The four screws are accessible on yours now, they're under the leather cover on the stitched unit.
