Timing belt, ignition, carb repairs and now runs poorly*FIXED

Post by MyWE4 »

Hi all, First, sorry this is so long...

I am asking for help on this car because I am out of ideas...

it starts if you play with the distributor...it will not rev up ...it's laboring badly...popping...turn it off... there is much too much timing..retard the timing and it starts, but runs poorly

This is what I know about the history..

The car is a 1976 with a 2.0L block. ...it has electronic ignition, it ran fine when I got the car a few years ago...I did rebuild the carb and it ran GREAT...as I was doing the body work, the car lost spark, which I quickly found to be a failed pick up ..(the insulation on the wires, under the cap, turned to dust and shorted out). I ordered a pick up, but for the meantime, I simply lifted the wires up to keep them from shorting and the car started back up!! all I needed was to pull the car in and out of the shop during the work day....that was good for 3-4 days..then POP! it backfired and lost spark ...not to worry though, I will have the parts to put it back together that week end.

OK- here is the list of parts----pick up, ing. module, timing belt (the first one was wrong...I ordered it for a 1976....too short...counted the teeth and got the correct one)--with all the front seals----piece of cake---replaced the ignition parts---lined up the old belt, pulled it apart..replaced the seals...found the crank pulley worn so I ordered one of them. again, to move the car I thought I would pop on the old belt to move the car again..........It has not run since.....

I found the carb started to overflow with gas..the float needle was not sealing (sitting with old gas..?) ordered one more kit and fixed that...(flushed out the gas tank this time too!!)

I thought that the carb was the no start problem...flooding out the eng...easy enough...but it is not to be....

I have checked for vacuum leaks with my smoke machine(and fixed a few SMALL ones) pulled the carb and carefully looked it over-- rechecked the pick up gap..spot on.---.swapped out the plugs and gaped the new .022ish -- did a comp. test, 145-148psi---pulled the cam covers off to look at the operation of the cams..ok .. made sure # 1 was @ top dead and all the marks were good...ok..played with the cam timing..intake-exhaust advanced a tooth, retarded a tooth--I even advanced the intake and retarded the exhaust(that put the alignment pins on the pulleys pointing up)-all tha did was mak it worse...with the belt installed as per the book, the dist. is pointed at #4, as it should be...but to get it to run you need to advance the timing somewhat

I have checked and rechecked everything (as per the book) and this thing should be purring....I am missing something!! I still think there is a timing issue...could there be something with the mix of 1.8L and 2.0L parts messing me up??

here are some pics. that I took today...

The magnet under the pickup coil has to be oriented the right way. There is a white stripe on it, and instructions come with the p/u coil that tell you if it has to face up or down. Different manufacturers do it differently, so sometimes the line has to be on top, sometimes on the bottom.
I would try this first, it's free :-)

check the addvance springs
remove the cap"dont lossen the dizzy"and try addvancing the dizzy.
does it have a good return?
if not GM curve kit small springs will do
did you fry your coil?do you have any spark?
do you have 12v power at the coil?

one of these should help
when you do everything correct people arent sure youve done anything at all (futurama)

yes, the dist. advance moves smooth.....the coil has good spark..the cap is in good condition...could use some wires...but that is not the cause of this problem...I did clean the connection @ the coil and replace a few wire ends today, but I will check for 12+volts @ the coil when idling though..I can then say I checked it :)

thanks for the tips....keep them coming
