1800 head on 2000 engine
1800 head on 2000 engine
I am looking at tweaking an extra 2000 engine that I have for my Fiat and I want to do the 1800 head swap on it (among other things like bigger carb, single plane intake, etc.) . I'm looking around for an 1800 head and some info about the process. I understand from a general perspective that it's fairly straight forward bolt and go type implementation. I haven't been able to find an 1800 head. Anyone got one or know where I can find one? Also, anyone know where there is a description of the process or any gotchas to look out for when doing it?
Re: 1800 head on 2000 engine
seems like I just saw a ported and polished 1800 head on ebay. My memory is fuzzy, so I can't be 100% sure it was an 1800....

straight bolt on to increase compression ratio. had mine seriously reworked before installing, but not necessary.

Thanks for the responses.
Danno, I checked Ebay and didn't see one. That is one of my big things about this is that I can't find the 1800 head. Anyone got a good source for this kind of thing?

Re: 1800 head on 2000 engine
ahhh, I found what I was referring to. (ebay item # 170187999849) and stored it as a 1800 head, dunno why. I'm not sure which engine that is, someone with more knowledge will have to help me out, my best guess is that it is a 1600, but it's hard to say, could be a 1300 or something....dlbj wrote:Thanks for the responses.

edit: went back to that auction and he says it's off of his 1800, so it should work. He doesn't say it, but since hs auction says it's for a 124 or 131 it can't be a 1800 (am I right on that?) it must be a 1600 head? anyway, i dunno the pros and cons if it is a 1600, just something to consider.
Re: 1800 head on 2000 engine
Danno, Thanks again for your reply, I really do appreciate everyones input. I saw that head on eBay and I checked the casting number. Apparently that head is for a 1600 not an 1800. I believe that I read that some modifications would have to made for fitting a 1600 head to post 1600 engines for the coolant galleries. I've been going thru some old Guy Croft documents that I have to see if I could find where I read that, but I can't find it. Does anyone know of the implication of putting a 1600 head on a 2000 engine?
Just for reference I found a good paper that can be used to check the casting number to the engine it was made for. It's: http://www.mirafiori.com/faq/fiatcarb_july2004.pdf The document also gives a really good breakdown of info for upgrading carburetors.

Re: 1800 head on 2000 engine
another great read (also by Bradley Artigue) is this:
http://www.artigue.com/fiat/Pubs/Artigu ... 124_MM.pdf
He just got it done last fall, and I THINK it's supposed to supersede that other document, however, it says "1st edition" on it, and really it would be the "3rd", except for the name change.... Anyway, as he doesn't keep that 2004 document around on his site anymore, I'd say it's all been covered in the new document.... He does talk about the benefits, drawbacks, interchangeability, etc. I'll let you do the reading, as I haven't yet.

Re: 1800 head on 2000 engine
Dan,
That is a great paper. The one that I had referenced was oriented to the carburetor whereas the one you found is more comprehensive.
As far as finding an 1800 head, I think I may check the midwest 124 site as recommended by mdrburchette.
Thanks,
- D.J.

you are right. He says this in the document I linked to.dlbj wrote:Dan,

"In 2002 I started to compile the various pieces of knowledge I obtained over the years into guides, first on carburetion and intake/exhaust systems, then, in 2004, a guide (more like a pamphlet) on fuel injection. I revised both guides over the years and finally compiled everything into this single document"
Jon at MW124 is a great guy and will either have what you are looking for, or know where you can get it! Good luck.dlbj wrote: As far as finding an 1800 head, I think I may check the midwest 124 site as recommended by mdrburchette.
