Starting in the morning

Post by Hamush »

Well in the early hours of the morning when it's all wet and moist outside, the car simply refuses to start.
It cranks and it cranks but to no avail.
Now, i do know it's due to the condensation in the distributor cap, and a lot of people have told me to just insulate the distributor cap from the outside elements and that i should be fine.

Others have told me to spray WD 40 on the contacts in the cap in the morning and that it should start fine, which didnt really work out for me.

Any ideas on this fix?

thank you.

Condensation in the distributor cap isn't really a normal everyday occurrence, even in wet, cold weather. It can happen, yes, but usually happens as a result of actual water intrusion, not just environmental conditions. I could be wrong, but your hard starting problem is likely something else. Could it be that you have a choke problem?

you could go to a junkyard and go to a 90s ford dis and get the rubber boot cover

check your poisitive wire on the coil for 12v early in the morning
and that its tight

also do you have a mecanical pump
it may have a bad diapham
so fuel isnt there in the AM
when you do everything correct people arent sure youve done anything at all (futurama)

what is your coil output? The stock points system had a coil that only put out about 12k volts and much less if the point gap is wrong.

Ok,
so in the morning it just cranks and cranks, and basically, my battery has almost been drained over this.
in the afternoon, once it warms up, it starts right off the bat. so this is only the morning problem.

on many days when it's dry outside in the morning, it starts great.

i have an electric fuel pump.

Pardon my ignorance, where do i check the voltage? where is that coil you speak of? :)

on the distibutor look at the middle wire it comes from the coil
theres two wires on it test them for 12v with the key on
that wire comes from the ingition
the other one feeds a signal for your tachometer

well, the problem is solved.

all it took was for me to apply duct tape around the distributor cap and seal the little 2 holes on the cap itself to keep the moisture out.

the down side of this is that i sent my wife to grab some duct tape from walmart and she came back with PINK duct tape, so now i have a pink distributor cap and housing :D

at least the car starts in the morning just fine :)

We all have our crosses to bear. Fiat218 has to put up with gold plated carbs and you've got pink duct tape on your distributor. Alas and alack.
