Tricks and Tips for Removing Brake Rotor Dust Cap?

Hey Folks,

I'm need to replace the brake rotors. SHort of beating the crap out of the rotor nut dust covers does anyone have a trick they use to get these off and still retain their shape?

Lots of patience

Seriously, that and two blade screw drivers of equal size on opposite sides of the cap. Pry (you won't notice anything), rotate hub, <<iterate many times>>. I ended up doing that routine over several days. Was a real pain.

A small hammer to gently tap on the screw driver helps. Try to prevent the cap from getting cockeyed when removing.

There is of course a specialty tool for the job, but Channel-Lock pliers will often work.

To replace the rotors you don't need to remove the bearing dust cap.

Just remove the spacer bolts and away you go. On the front if it's been a while you may need to do a bit of beating...

I saw that in the manual about removing the bolts but it doesn't make sense to me ads every other rotor I've ever pulled is held on by a nut. (I guess I have to see it first to understand).

The cap you are trying to removing covers the nut holding the hub to the stub axle, the disk fits onto the hub and is held in place by the bolts.

I was talking to a guy at work several months ago. He was trying to replace the rotors on his truck. He wasn't used to rotors that were integral with the hub. He had chipped parts off the rotor with a sledge hammer trying to get it off. Then he looked at the new one. It came of easily after he took off the hub nut.

well i'll be damned, that was the easiest rotor change i've ever experienced. now for the rears and the dreaded emergency brake cable

Those are a piece of cake. Loosed it up per the manual.
