32 ADFA 14; Carburetor stuck in fast idle mode- sticking cam

Post by lvacordian »

I have a 78 spider with a 32 ADFA 14 and am finding that the carburetor is stuck in fast idle mode. The butterfly valve does appear to work fine as it moves appropriately with respect to the engines temperature. In other words it opens and closes when it’s supposed to. I did find that that the fast idle cam is stuck and is not allowing the throttle rod (the one attached to the fast idle adjustment screw) to go all the way down in order to facilitate a normal idle at the regular operating temperature.

I took the water choke housing off the carburetor and found that a small metal tab had broken off in the inside of the fast idle cam housing. That tab appears to keep the fast idle cam from retracting too far back (counterclockwise) into the housing lest the cam will get stuck……This appears to be what has happened and is the reason the car is stuck in fast idle. Does anyone see any reason to think otherwise?

My other questions are has anyone else had this happen and if so how did you address it? Should this piece be welded, silver soldered, glued, or brazed back on? Are their any other alternatives to buying another choke housing if the piece can’t be welded back on? Could I tap threads and place a machine screw there instead?

I went to my local FIAT bone yard and found that good choke housings are hard to come by since all the used ones I looked at had the same tab broken off. Is this a common problem for the 32 ADFA’s?

I have a 32 adfa and mine is not broken. I'm sure there are many on this forum that have a parts carb that would help you with the broken piece. I don't have one or I would just mail it to ya.
