the tranny drain plug uses a 12 mm hex driver. the tranny fill plug, and both the plugs on the differential use 17mm wrenches. if you swap to a magnetic oil pan drain plug, you will prolly end up with a 17mm hex head plug....just like the differential.

13mm isn't even 1/64th larger than 1/2 inch. Though I agree that a 1/2" allen key could round off in a 13mm socket under high torque.
Years ago I bought a plug wrench that looks kinda like a mace with various sizes of hex and square drives sticking out of a ball at each end. Don't know if they still make them. This thread was a good heads up. I haven't changed the oil yet (car's in storage) and I wouldn't have the correct wrench with me.

For the casual mechanic, HarborFreight.com has a wide assortment of tools and accessories at inexpensive prices. No, they're not Mac or Snap-On or Craftsman, but I don't make my living under the car. Some recent purchases:
9 pc. metric hex bit socket set, 4 - 17mm, $12.99 (There's your oil pan, cam covers, steering box, etc. for thirteen bucks.)
7 pc. metric crowfoot wrench set, $4.49 Many other "stubby" wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers, etc.
3/8" drive clicker torque wrench, $14.99
40 pc. hose clamp assortment, $4.99 Two sets will do my entire Spider.
Many retail locations, too. They sent me a warranty replacement part for a MIG welder in two days.

That's a good price for those hex wrenches. Thanks for the heads up. I've scoured the local auto parts stores for those silly things.

on a related note, a set of those inexpensive wrenches are invaluable when you have to bend a wrench for a specialty application such as a carb wrench or dizzy wrench
